Demystifying Minerals

Most of us know that vitamins and minerals are good for us, but what exactly are minerals?! The first thing that often comes to mind are sparkly rocks deep within the earth’s crust, like magnesium. This mineral makes up about 13 percent of the planet's mass and a large fraction of the planet's mantle. But we’re talking about the minerals found in food—for example, bananas also contain magnesium. And like vitamins, minerals help your body grow, develop, and function properly. So what’s the difference between vitamins and minerals? Vitamins are organic (made by plants or animals) and can be broken down by heat, air or acid. Minerals are inorganic (come from the soil) and hold on to their chemical structure. Essential minerals come from your diet and are essential for your health. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 76% of adults did note meet the recommended fruit intake and 87% of adults did not meet the recommended vegetable intake. So our Mineral Complete formulas contain magnesium, calcium, chromium, and zinc with vitamins C, D, E and K2 to help keep your body running smoothly.*

How’d we decide what minerals to include? Some minerals, like sodium, are already consumed at adequate levels in the Western diet (blame potato chips), so we left them out. The minerals we chose are the ones that play a big role in our daily health, and are often consumed at levels below the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) established by the Health and Medicine Division (HMD). Along with this, we include these nutrients in forms that are easily absorbed by the body. For example:
  • Magnesium as magnesium citrate for cardiovascular health* and proper muscle function.* It also supports energy production by helping to maintain your body’s ability to metabolize fats and carbohydrates.* Magnesium citrate is one of the better absorbed forms of calcium when taken orally. Food sources include almonds, green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, whole wheat, and dark chocolate. (Yay!)
  • Calcium as calcium citrate, one of the more easily absorbed forms of calcium available, for bone health*. Food sources include yogurt, cheese, milk, salmon, fortified juices, and leafy green vegetables such as broccoli and kale.
  • Zinc as zinc citrate for your immune system and to support healthy hair, skin and nails.* Zinc citrate is a more expensive form of zinc, and it’s better absorbed by the body than another common form, zinc oxide. Food sources include red meat, shellfish, legumes, seeds, nuts, and dairy.
  • Chromium niacinate for energy support*. Food sources include broccoli, barley, and oats.

BETTER TOGETHER

You may be wondering if you can take Mineral Complete with other SmartyPants products. The short answer is YES. Our multifunctional Mineral chews were designed to complement our other daily supplements. Just as our vitamin products contain essential vitamins that are difficult for some people to get consistently from diet alone, our mineral products include essential minerals to help fill in common dietary gaps—for example, calcium. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Our Mineral Complete formulas (including Adult Mineral Complete and Kids Mineral Complete) can be taken with or without food.** However, to get the most from your minerals, we recommend taking them at a different time than our formulas that contain fiber or when eating a high-fiber meal. That’s because fiber can interfere with mineral absorption. So, we prefer taking our mineral chews separately from our gummies, like in the evening.
